We believe in total fee transparency. Our model is designed very intentionally to do three specific things:

  • Make it affordable for employers to offer a 401(k) without hiding any fees in the fine print.

  • Keep fees low for employees, in addition to providing advising, so they can save as much money as possible.

  • Charge enough so that we don’t cut corners in the administration and security of your 401(k).


There is a small proviso buried in the fine print of most 401(k) provider contracts that makes the employer the fiduciary for the plan (known as a 3(21) fiduciary). This means that the investment adviser can put employees into expensive funds (for which the adviser receives generous kickbacks) with high fees, but you (the employer) are on the hook for those fees if they are deemed “too high” and in the event of underperforming investments. Employers have, in fact, been found legally liable for poorly run, overpriced 401(k) plans. Less than 20% of 401(k) plans on the market list the adviser as the fiduciary. Instead, those plans offload that risk to employers.
